Developed by me and a team of more than 20 other students over the course of an entire semester, Path of Pride is a balloon-fight styled local multiplayer arcade game themed around George Mason University. Though I didn’t have much direct input on the game’s design, I assumed the crucial role of the project’s Programming Lead. It gave me an excellent opportunity to apply the things I’ve learned from steadily building up my personal Unity project, End Transmission, (as well as smaller school projects in the engine) in a greater context. Though the project was not without bumps along the way, this is definitely where I proved myself capable of working in a large team, even taking on key leadership responsibilities.
Coordinating a group of three other C# programmers while also regularly discussing the game’s trajectory with the other team Leads presented a unique challenge, especially since the entire project was developed remotely. But we ultimately pulled through, and I learned a lot about myself, my workflow, and how I work together with others. Of course, being the Programming Lead didn’t just come down to directorial duties. I also personally coded the majority of the game’s systems, from the audio manager, to the boss state system, to the local drop-in/drop out multiplayer, to animation implementation, to the game’s menus. After laying these foundational elements, I was able to explain how they functioned to my fellow programmers, and so we were able to efficiently divert our resources, accomplishing all sorts of things from bug fixing to adding new mechanics to taking feedback from the design teams. Path of Pride was a massive step towards improving my project management skills, and it make me realize just how rewarding team-based development can be!
